Jaxtr
At first I wasn't thinkin' too much about this other than checkin' it out since it's some novelty the kids are using. But, once I signed up and started seeing the practicality, I was very impressed. Jaxtr was originally created for the social networking crowd on MySpace and other sites to protect phone number privacy.
Think of it like the anonymity of PayPal, for your phone.

Jaxtr is a free calling service that links the phone through an internet VOIP connection. If this lives up to the possibilities I see, I can really cut down my long distance charges with family and friends. Designed to eliminate the international calling charges for cell phones, Jaxtr also works with your home phone or you can have calls forwarded to your work number.

Depending upon where you live, a person could use Jaxtr to reduce or eliminate their long distance charges. Down here, next door to The Finest University in the World, Jaxtr assigns me Dallas area numbers to call my friends nationwide. Not exactly local. Least not yet. Jaxtr is in the beta stage, that means it's new and still getting tested out. But as they grow I'm sure they'll have more regional numbers to assign. Using Jaxter with you cell phone will not eliminate the regular minute usage charged by your cellular provider, but you may be able to use it to get around long distance fees to your friends who have Jaxtr. Save texting fees from your provider, instead send text messages through your Jaxtr completely free of charge. The service provides 100 free minutes a month they call jax. You can't buy extra jax, but they make it easy for you to earn more jax. The folks runnin' the show are talkin' about someday having a paid service but right now, only the free service is available.

Much to my surprise, Jaxtr was incredibly simple to set up. Once inside you have an interface where you control the appearance of a gadget called a widget to be placed on web pages. They give a few color choices, but not Maroon (sorry Aggies).
You don't have to have a website to display your widget either. They give you a handy little web address and page for you to send your friends to like the one I've got right here. http://www.jaxtr.com/wannabeaggie

With Jaxtr's control panel, you control the calls you'll receive. Only family and friends you approve will actually connect you by the phone numbers you register. Everybody else can be sent to a voice mail, and you won't be charged jax for it. People can send you text messages through your widget on your webpage or at your Jaxter web address. But, should somebody ever get out of control and misbehave, you can block that user from any future contact. At least through your Jaxtr.
Ladies. Never give your home or cell number
to a man till you know he's earned the right.

Till then, give'm Jaxtr.

Click the TRY button to set up your own Jaxter.
You could try to call me, but if you aren't expected my Jaxtr will send you to the voicemail.
